I can be your long lost pal. I can call you Betty. And Betty when you call me. You can call me Al. A man walks down the street. He says why am I short of attention. Got a short little span of attention. And wo my nights are so long. Where's my wife and family.

“Sometimes there are songs that I like and then at a certain point in a tour, I’ll say, ‘What the fuck are you doing, Paul?’” he quipped. “Quite often that would come during You Can Call Me Al. I’d think, ‘What are you doing? You’re like a Paul Simon cover band. You should get off the road, go home,” Simon said to The Times.

Ani do płyty "Graceland" z 1986 roku z przebojem "You Can Call Me Al", dzięki której afrykańskie rytmy, z których korzystał, zachwyciły Zachód i która ląduje niemal we wszystkich zestawieniach płyt wszech czasów. Widać w nim uśmiechniętego, niskiego pana w kapelusiku wchodzącego do sali nagrań. To Paul Simon. Jedną z piosenek, instrumentalną "In the Garden of Edie", poświęcił swojej wieloletniej żonie, znakomitej wokalistce Edie Brickell. You Can Call Me Al Lyrics by Paul Simon from the Concert in Hyde Park [2 CD + Blu-ray] album - including song video, artist biography, translations and more: A man walks down the street He says why am I soft in the middle now Why am I soft in the middle The rest of my life …
‘You Can Call Me Al’. ‘You Can Call Me Al’ geeft daarvoor inderdaad wel een paar aanwijzingen. A man walks down the street / He says, Why am I soft in the middle now? / The rest of my life is so hard!’ Hij voelt zich eenzaam en verloren: ‘My nights are so long! / Where’s my wife and family? / What if I die here?’ Existentiële vragen zonder antwoord, maar het blijft verteerbaar door de nonchalante praat-zang en de absurde woordkeuze: ‘Don’t want to end up a cartoon, in a cartoon graveyard’. Dan komt het refrein: ‘If you’ll be my bodyguard, / I can be your long lost pal! / I can call you Betty, / And Betty, when you call me, / You can call me Al!’ Hij ontwaart ‘angels in the architecture’.
